A New Editor for a New Era

Well, that might be a bit dramatic for a blog title, but we're really excited for the new board editor! The editor is the part where you type in your questions and answers - the part that has the buttons where you can choose bold, italics, etc.

TL;DR

The short version is simply this: we weren't happy with the speed (read: performance), clunkiness, and lack of extensibility of our old editor, called CKEditor. After doing a good bit of research, we settled on one that mimics the editor found on Medium.com, aptly called the Medium.js Editor.

Why Bother?

We're always looking for ways to make the site perform better and make the experience better for our visitors. We weren't happy with the old editor, so we figured you wouldn't be thrilled either. We want to make sure that you're happy and the site is always getting more efficient.

So, What's New?

The first thing you'll notice is that it looks like there's no editor at all. We thought it was a nice touch that the extra interface just gets out of the way. Why make you stare at formatting buttons when you aren't ready to format anything?

It's only when you highlight some text that you really see the new editor bar. The options are currently the same as before: bold, italic, underline, subscript, superscript, link, ordered list, unordered list, and clear formatting. With these as the baseline, we have the ability to add more over time, even coming up with our own if we want!

Here it is in action:

Soon, we'll be adding some more documentation on the new editor, but for now go give it a try for yourself!
